There are two key regions in Northern Spain known for sightings of Bears, Wolves, and Wildcats, and we have carefully designed this itinerary to explore one of these exceptional areas.
Regarding arrival logistics, Santander Airport is the closest to the region, but it offers limited flight options. A more practical choice is Madrid Airport. If you can arrange a flight that arrives in Madrid by 12:00 PM, that would work perfectly with our schedule.
Alternatively, we recommend flying in the day before and staying overnight in Madrid. There’s a convenient hotel right next to the airport, and we’ll be happy to pick you up from there the following morning to begin your journey.
Meals: Dinner
Upon arrival at Madrid Airport, you will be welcomed by your guide and begin your journey toward the Montaña de Riaño, nestled in the Cantabrian Mountains. After checking in at our accommodation, and depending on the time of arrival, we may head out for our first excursion—an exciting opportunity to search for the elusive Wildcat in its natural habitat.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
These mountains and valleys are home to a wide variety of birds of prey, including Red Kites, Northern Goshawks, Short-toed Eagles, Griffon and Egyptian Vultures, and the majestic Golden Eagle. During migration periods, it’s also likely that we’ll spot species such as the Black Kite and Honey Buzzard.
In the forests, we may encounter smaller but equally fascinating species like the Crested Tit, Firecrest, Short-toed Treecreeper, and Common Crossbill, among others.
The region also supports healthy populations of Wild Boar, Chamois, Red Deer, and Roe Deer—all of which serve as primary prey for the Iberian Wolf.
During one of the three days, we will dedicate time to searching for alpine bird specialists such as the Wallcreeper, Water Pipit, Yellow-billed Chough, and with a bit of luck, the elusive Citril Finch.
However, if your preference leans more toward searching for wild cats, wolves, and other mammals rather than birds, that's absolutely fine. You can discuss your interests with the guide the day before and tailor your experience accordingly.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
After an early breakfast followed by a morning safari, we will depart for the Western Cantabrian Mountains, a scenic drive of approximately three hours. Upon arrival and check-in at our accommodation, we’ll prepare for an evening excursion in search of the elusive Cantabrian Brown Bear.
The meadows in this region of the Picos are teeming with life — home to a rich diversity of butterflies, and mammals such as the Stoat and Weasel, adding further excitement to our exploration.
Meals: Breakfast
After breakfast, and depending on your flight schedule, we may have time for one final morning safari to make the most of your time in the region. Following the excursion, we will transfer to the airport for your onward journey.
End of the tour.
